Sugar is a moot point for many and it divides people into two distinct camps – there are those who ban it totally, who declare that it is a poison and the root of all evil, whilst there are those that still stick to the old adage of “a little of what you fancy does you good” and that sugar, in moderation, will do you no harm at all. However, as stated here – are sweet foods the cause of so many problems? Or, is it merely something thought up by health food cranks to shame us into guilt- shunning the treats we’ve enjoyed for so long as part of a healthy, balanced diet?
According to the American Heart Association, it is perfectly okay for men to consume 9 teaspoons of sugar and women 6 teaspoons as part of their daily calorific intake. This amounts to around 150 calories. Let’s put this into context. If you’re a healthy adult, a normal weight and take on board the right levels of nutrients from all other areas of your diet, this means you could safely eat, according to Authority Nutrition a small Snickers bar, or a can of coke as part of your plan. The real problems stem from if you’re already overweight, if you’re suffering from pre-diabetes or any other complaints that might affect your heart or your cardiovascular system in general. Then, it’s imperative you monitor your intake and keep to a sensible regime. Even then however, it can sometimes be better to have a little “real” sugar than to cram your diet with so many of the healthy alternatives on the market which can be just as unhealthy. It seems we might just be swapping one set of conditions for another!
Eating sugar isn’t always bad for you. It’s knowing your limits, realizing that it’s OK to have some sweet treats and being able to indulge yourself without feeling any guilt that is key. If you keep that in mind, and learn to relax around food, it will make all the difference to how you feel about what you eat in general.
